Fall/Winter Maintenance Tip

With fall approaching and winter close behind it is important to keep your gutters free of leafs and debris.  Over flowing gutters place all roof water directly  next to your house, thus increasing your chance of a flooded basement or crawl space.  The number one cause of a wet basement is surface water saturating the ground then soaking into your basement.  Properly working gutters should discharge water 6ft from the house on a grade that distributes water away from the house.  If the grade is negative towards the house (ground sloping towards house) it is recommended that you add soil high in clay content next to the foundation; thus building up the ground around the house.  The water will then run away from the foundation.

Safety Tip!!

Check your safety reverse mechanism on your garage door

This devices usually comes in two forms a laser device that stops and reverses the door if it's signal is interrupted or a function of the motor that senses upward pressure and reverses the door in the event of such pressure.  The easiest way to test this is to grab the bottom of the door as it is coming down and pull up.  The door should reverse, if not release the door and let it close.  You will then need to call a service tech to diagnose and repair the problem.
